UV Printers - Features and Benefits

What are the major benefits provided by UV printers?

  • UV ink dries during printing so the printed products can be used immediately
  • Multiple products can be arranged on the flat-bed of the printer and all printed during the same print run
  • Some UV printers can be fitted with a rotary device that allows printing directly onto cylindrical items
  • UV prints can be layered allowing for successive layers to be printed on top on one another.  The result being textured prints like wood grain, Braille Etc.
  • There is also a clear UV ink / varnish that can be used to add a high-quality gloss finish or special effects like rain drops on a leaf

Most UV printers are used to print directly onto items such as phone cases, sport drinks bottles, machine parts Etc.

UV printers provide major benefits including:

  • Available in both flat-bed and roll-feed models are available
  • Products can be handled and used as soon as printing has been completed
  • White ink allows full-colour prints on dark coloured products
  • Textured (raised) images like like Braille can be printed.
  • Clear UV inks (varnish) also allow a gloss to be printed over the entire image or just in some places (like raindrops on a leaf)
  • Some UV printers can be used with an optional rotary print attachment which allows cylindrical object like wine bottles, sports drink bottles Etc to be printed up to 360 degrees.
  • Some makes/models allow one pass printing of double-sided images with each side having the same or different images (ideal for shop windows)
  • Choice of scratch resistant inks for hard surface products or stretch inks for flexible products
  • Metallic colours can now be printed with some makes/models
  • Latest generation UV DTF printers can be used to produce stickers and/or small format signage much more quickly that regular roll-feed UV printers.    When using a UV DTF printer there is no need for contour cut lines, contour cutting, weeding or lamination.   The finished product that is produced by the machine is ready to be applied to a hard surface product

Flat bed UV printers are commonly used for printing flat items like phone cases, metal panels, plastic panels, glass, ceramics Etc.   Multiple, small items can be positioned on the bed and all printed together as one print job.

It is also possible to print onto slightly curved items but in this case the overall print size for each item will be reduced.

Some flat bed UV printers can be fitted with an optional rotary printing device that allows printing onto cylindrical items like bottles and sports drink bottles.

Stickers - After printing has been completed the film is then contour cut then weeded to remove unprinted areas of film, then laminated with a transfer film.  Just prior to use the protective backing is removed to expose the self-adhesive backing.

Signage - When large-format signage is produced there is often no requirement for contour cutting. The film is secured to the surface by removing the protective backing sheet.

Banners - Banner material is not self-adhesive and can be trimmed to size and then used

UV DTF  printers are typically used for printing stickers but provide some major time and cost savings as compared to other methods.

The process of making stickers with a UV DTF printer is fully automated with the end product being ready to apply to hard surface items

  • There is no need to add cut-contour lines to the artwork
  • No contour cutting time
  • No weeding required
  • No need to apply transfer film (it is applied automatically by the printer)
